It's a mixed bag. As news reporting has draped itself with science reporting where convenient, some people are also concerningly skeptical on science matters as well. The trouble, in my view, is that what I would personally consider to be responsible and proportional news reporting is a fuzzy definition that is colored by my biases. Regardless, I would like to see a higher standard of average education for people in the west, particularly Americans, so that they're better equipped to do things like reason about the news they do encounter rather than accepting everything as gospel when they hear it.
