Shouldn’t we be artificially limiting the amount of women accepted in order to ensure gender equity? Isn’t this what we normally do, for example to prevent the best Universities from being almost entirely Asian?

- proc0 4y ago"Equity" isn't about equality. It's about making up for the past grievances of the different intersectional identities. So since women missed out in the past, the current generation of men can be sacrificed because of the sins of past generation, despite having no connection (because it's identity politics). I'm not condoning this, just explaining how I think they would probably justify it. A lot of people, if not the majority (because it's mainstream now), don't realize we no longer live in a society with liberal values of truth, freedom, justice, and equality. We've entered a postmodern era, where everything is a power game, everyone must fit in either oppressor or oppressed, and these categories are based on immutable traits that you cannot change. Quite the irony...
- 8f2ab37a-ed6c 4y agoI heard this phrased as people wanting “revenge instead of equality”. It will be interesting to see what happens as the pendulum continues its over-corrective course. Will there be a long-delayed reckoning like with China's preference for boys and the one child policy? I don't expect the ideologues who are encouraging the current trajectory will be around to pay the price for it.
- SwiftyBug 4y ago> A lot of people, if not the majority (because it's mainstream now), don't realize we no longer live in a society with liberal values of truth, freedom, justice, and equality I think I missed that history class. When was society ever truthful, free, equal, just?
- orangea 4y agosociety had those values, it doesn't mean that society embodied those values.
- jakelazaroff 4y agoWhat does it even mean to “have” a value you don’t embody?
- 8f2ab37a-ed6c 4y agoLip service.
- BurningFrog 4y agoIt means you're honestly trying to achieve the value. I have a value of being fit and healthy.

- j7ake 4y agoYou’re saying a white woman from upper class family is getting lumped into a group that is treated better than man immigrating from Cambodia ? Not sure what kind of grievances white women from upper class families were suffering from but it sure seems less than people from many places in Asia like Cambodia. Sounds like a messed up system.
- 8f2ab37a-ed6c 4y agoI can't see a rhyme or reason to oppression math and the arbitrary groupings, it seems to constantly evolve with politics and blog output. Same as with lumping all "people of color" into the same category. Does an Indian brahmin descendant have the same struggles as a Cambodian immigrant? They're both "Asian", both "POCs", yet their average outcomes couldn't be any more different.
- TMWNN 4y ago>Isn’t this what we normally do, for example to prevent the best Universities from being almost entirely Asian? Based on Caltech (no affirmative action by own decision) and Berkeley and UCLA (no affirmative action by elected proposition, although many and varied means are used to attempt to bypass the restriction), elite universities will be "only" about 30-40% Asian without affirmative action.
