63% of University of North Carolina Class of 2025 is female
- matt3210 4y agoEquality!! For reals though, of the gender ratio is skewed too much students will stop enrolling.
- AnimalMuppet 4y agoI don't know about that. If I were 18, male, straight, and single, "two girls for every boy" might sound pretty good...
- WillPostForFood 4y agoIt is good for men, but bad for women.
- thepasswordis 4y agoHey it worked for Feynman!
- chrisco255 4y agoThe odds are good, but the goods are odd.
- MerelyMortal 4y agoIn other examples, I might agree. However I think I would like to have my dating pool consist of engineers - people who are more likely to be intelligent and logical. Though I suppose that would be odd; most people are not intelligent nor are they logical.
- dehugger 4y agoJust maximize for logic and date a computer.
- Rebelgecko 4y agoOr maximize for dates and go out with ISO-8601
- MerelyMortal 4y agoNo wonder 50% of marriages end in divorce; it's only one of life's biggest events, and people don't take it seriously.
- dehugger 4y agoI was mocking your pomposity about "intelligence and logic", not making light of marriage.
- MerelyMortal 4y agoWhy are you making fun of what I value then? How is that pompous of me to find someone whom I would be compatible with so I don't end up divorced like half of marriages?
- mcphage 4y ago> The odds are good, but the goods are odd. That's fine, I was pretty odd myself at 18.

- 2143 4y agoOn that page there's an "Enrollment by Gender" graph which shows that since 2009 (which is when the graph starts) there's been significantly higher number of females than males over there every year.
- ggm 4y ago75% of engineering students in Tehran University have been women, in the past.
- Jiro 4y agoWomen in countries where women are relatively low status get engineering degrees to make money, not to follow their dreams. Women who get degrees for personal fulfillment don't like engineering so much. This results in women getting more engineering degrees in countries where women are lower status.
- 55555 4y agoShouldn’t we be artificially limiting the amount of women accepted in order to ensure gender equity? Isn’t this what we normally do, for example to prevent the best Universities from being almost entirely Asian?
- deltaonenine 4y ago
- proc0 4y ago"Equity" isn't about equality. It's about making up for the past grievances of the different intersectional identities. So since women missed out in the past, the current generation of men can be sacrificed because of the sins of past generation, despite having no connection (because it's identity politics). I'm not condoning this, just explaining how I think they would probably justify it. A lot of people, if not the majority (because it's mainstream now), don't realize we no longer live in a society with liberal values of truth, freedom, justice, and equality. We've entered a postmodern era, where everything is a power game, everyone must fit in either oppressor or oppressed, and these categories are based on immutable traits that you cannot change. Quite the irony...
- 8f2ab37a-ed6c 4y agoI heard this phrased as people wanting “revenge instead of equality”. It will be interesting to see what happens as the pendulum continues its over-corrective course. Will there be a long-delayed reckoning like with China's preference for boys and the one child policy? I don't expect the ideologues who are encouraging the current trajectory will be around to pay the price for it.
- SwiftyBug 4y ago> A lot of people, if not the majority (because it's mainstream now), don't realize we no longer live in a society with liberal values of truth, freedom, justice, and equality I think I missed that history class. When was society ever truthful, free, equal, just?
- lvass 4y agoIt's 2021, not 2025. I wonder if this means women are more poised to become breadwinners or if going to university is becoming less correlated with it.
- jdale27 4y agoNo, in the US people who enroll in Fall 2021 as it says in the article are the Class of 2025 because that’s when they will graduate (assuming the typical 4-year schedule).
- jmeister 4y ago19% intend to major in biology, 19% intend to become physicians.. is that normal in American universities? Seems high to me.
- mjh2539 4y agoYes, it is normal for entering undergraduates. They haven't yet gone through several rounds of weed-out courses. Most of them will end up changing majors to psychology, sociology, and education.
- devwastaken 4y agoAs someone involved in universities - uni's that are blue are actively discriminatory against men. People from the outside can argue as they like, but when you're actually in it you are told that 1. Men are the cause of bad things everywhere. Congress, Jeff bezos, trump, your typical ideas of patriarchy. 2. Men are responsible for and initiate abuse always. The idea of woman abusing men is not even entertained. 3. Criticism of this means you're sexist/bad/undeserving of life. If you look at how people act on Twitter, that's close to it. These are actual required classes and is how administration enforces policy. Most people are taking their ideas of how uni politics were 10-20 years ago. But things have changed. Psuedo-woke Twitter is unfortunately real people, and they have jobs in government. On top of this: Universities act as their own courts, they can and will eject students for heresay claims. No due process. Universities are textbook dictatorships. The students cannot vote for whom makes the rules. Yet they are directly affected. Their costs and spending have risen dramatically over time. They argue this is because of less government aid - it's really because they don't control spending. They will overspend on cafeteria decor and luxurious dorms. Politically motivated programs that students are forced to pay for. Why on earth would any young man go into that when there's plenty of trade roles hiring? Make good money, start a family, own your own life.
- MerelyMortal 4y ago> Universities act as their own courts, they can and will eject students for heresay claims. No due process. I can speak a little towards that. I was a student member of my university's disciplinary board. No due process and no fairness for the accused. I highly recommend anyone who is requested to go to one, to hire a lawyer.
- tablespoon 4y ago> I can speak a little towards that. I was a student member of my university's disciplinary board. > No due process and no fairness for the accused. > I highly recommend anyone who is requested to go to one, to hire a lawyer. Weren't there well known cases where they refused to allow the accused's lawyer to participate in the process. Seems like the main use of the lawyer might be to (expensively) sue the school in real court, or at least threaten to do so.
- KingOfCoders 4y agoThe last psychatrist remarked [1] (I miss you), sadly, that women move there where men no longer are interested. With the fall of worth of [2] university education, the percentage of women increases. [1] "when more women enter a field, it means less men did, and if the men stopped going there, where did they go? Why did they leave? I assume they aren't home with the kids, right?[...] if power seeking men aren't running for Senate, where did they go?" - https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2013/01/no_self-respecting_woman_would.html https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2013/01/no_self-respecting_w... - alkonaut 4y agoGuessing the numbers will soon skew even more towards universities in states where you can get an abortion. It sure is where I’d try to go if I were a young woman.
- gnicholas 4y agoI'd be curious to know what percent of applicants are male/female. Also, what is the average or median profile of boys/girls who apply? Is the school engaging in affirmative action to dampen the sex disparity?
