Ask HN: Which MacBook to Buy Now?
My 2017 MBP is slowly dying
I like the dark colour of the new MacBook Air, but as a software dev, I prefer the specs of the MacBook Pro 14
Since the MacBook Pro 14 was released more than half a year ago, I’m now bit uncertain whether I should get it anyways or wait a little longer?
What's your thoughts?
- alexfromapex 4y agoI like my M1 Macbook Air, it's powerful enough to do heavy duty stuff but great on battery life
- JohnBooty 4y agoI do not think the M1 MBP 14 would be an unreasonable buy. The M2 provides about a 10-20% boost over the M1 according to Apple, so I don't think the M2 MBPs will be a revolution or anything.
- ushakov 4y agomy biggest worry about the MBA is thermal throttling
- foldr 4y agoI hear this a lot, but why does it worry you? Are you worried that the peak sustained performance of the M2 MBA will be insufficient for the tasks that you want to do? At the end of the day it's a small, light, passively cooled laptop.
- ushakov 4y agothe reason for this is because i'm web developer and i will have to use things like webpack that are poorly optimized my new laptop needs to be able to endure that (without getting uncomfortably hot)
- foldr 4y agoI have an M1 MBA, not an M2, but for the M1 at least, you have to really hit the CPU hard to make it noticeably warm. It's CPU+GPU loads that make it toasty. In most use cases webpack would run for a few seconds and then stop, so throttling is unlikely.
