UK supermarket scraps 'best before' dates on fruit and veg to cut food waste
- hunglee2 4y agothis is an excellent move. My sister-in-law operates entirely by 'best before' labelling, anything 2 days before best before is thrown out as not fresh enough. Amount of food waste is insane.
- jaclaz 4y agoMost people miss the "real" meaning of "best before" and "use by", the article has a link to an official uk.gov page: https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/best-before-and-use-by-dates https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/best-before-and-use-b... but long before that, some "common sense" (increasingly less common IMHO) should be used, I know a lot of people that consider these dates (both "best before" and "use by") as if each piece of food had an inbuilt timer similar to the bombs you see in movies.
- ls15 4y agoSoft carrots, sprouting potatoes, yellow broccoli and wrinkled peppers give me nightmares. I prefer my vegs and fruits to be very fresh and I avoid the ones that seem old to me, so I mostly judge them by the way they look and not by a date that is printed on the packaging.
