- agumonkey 4y agoI don't want to criticize FOSS, but GIMP rates #1 in the software that turn me furious faster than an IRC troll. On par with Eclipse. And I like gnu ed.
- tpoacher 4y agoIt's not critique, it's just opinion, so feel free! I love Gimp and cant spend 2 seconds in Photoshop before flipping a table from frustration. PS: I like gnu ed too :)
- klyrs 4y agoGood hell, I had to draw a circle a few weeks ago and I'd have thrown a brick through my monitor if I had a brick and a CRT. Was it always this bad? I swear I drew a circle with GIMP more than a decade ago and it wasn't like that. If anybody is wondering what we're on about, please learn how to draw a circle in GIMP. Maybe finish your beverage before reading. If you're up for it, try to discover the technique without the walkthrough. I didn't give up until about 20 minutes in. I'd like to know if somebody happens on a solution in finite time (without writing a python extension please). https://linuxhint.com/gimp-draw-circle/ https://linuxhint.com/gimp-draw-circle/
- tpoacher 4y agoStep 1. Create circle selection (or path, if you prefer) Step 2. Paint outline with paint tool of choice. "but, but ... it's a two step process" I hear you crying out with despair. Fine. Use a shapes plugin.
- klyrs 4y agoFor a filled circle, yeah, it's not that bad -- flood fill is there and it doesn't take long to learn the keystrokes. But what do you mean "paint outline with paint tool of choice?" Like, I'm supposed to carefully draw in the outline with a pencil or something? Get the hell out. I just wanted to draw red circles around about a dozen problematic spots in an image. Your "two steps" omit the "stroke" step, no hotkey, annoying dialog, which turns it into about 10 clicks&keypresses. In any non-suck drawing program, you click the ellipse tool, click&drag to make an ellipse, and that's it -- if you want to make many ellipses, just keep clicking&dragging -- an actual two-step process that doesn't require navigating menus. Lay off the cool-aid, this shouldn't be a plugin, it should be a default feature.
- tpoacher 4y agoPaint/stroke outline is a command that paints the outline of a selection or path. My preferred way is to do this via the selection editor, which is a basic menu (typically next to layouts) that gets activated after a selection has taken place. Pressing this button paints the outline with your tool of choice, e.g. a pencil or a brush. I don't disagree that one click is better than two, and yes I also don't know why the GIMP developers are so resistant to providing a basic "shapes" tool, but at the same time, clicking an extra button to paint the outline of a shaped selection is not super complicated either, and if what you got from the above was "carefully run your mouse along the outline", I don't think you'd do much better in Photoshop either. As for repeating a basic shape a bunch of times, what I typically do is create the first in a couple of clicks as above, and then copy paste or save it as a layer and duplicate away. Again, not the super complicated "you have to manually draw multiple outlines with your mouse" horror story you're trying to make it sound like...
- RugnirViking 4y agoit's really not that hard... use the circle select, then fill if you want a torus/donut/circle outline instead, use circle select then right click>selection>border thats it
