RIP SF Author Eric Flint
- mikewarot 4y agoI had a few books in the 1632 series[1] that I read during lunch when I was making gears. Every time a book again there were some new details I had missed previously. They never got old. 1632 in centered around a fictional coal mining town called Grantville, in West Virginia, that gets transported to 1631 Thuringia, Germany, in the middle of the 30 years war. Eric studied the actual town of Mannington, interviewing the many of those in government and industry to get a feel for the real world responsibilities and capabilities of each. It's one heck of a project, and he pulled it off brilliantly. I'm sad to know that he won't be around to see it keep going, as quite a community gathered around the story and it's follow ups. One got the overall feeling he spent those union-organizing years in towns like that. He will be missed (at least by me) not only for the 1632 series but also (perhaps more so) for his anti-DRM work and the Baen Free Library.
