> Diets are most successful amongst individuals willing to make considerable lifestyle changes, being mindful of what they’re eating at all times, and for the rest of their lives. That is, individuals with certain personality traits, particularly high on conscientiousness and low on neuroticism (and generally, higher in IQ)
This is completely nonsense. Availability of healthy food, income to buy healthier food as it's usually expensive, etc. IQ may be a factor, but not even the most important one.
> Long-term behavior modification, which would be required for successful weight loss for overweight individuals, is a central point of Daniel Callahan’s idea that obese people should be “shamed” into losing weight. ... The flaw in this idea should be obvious: there is no way to perform population-wide “counseling” necessary to achieve this effect; Callahan’s hopes are unrealistic.
100% an USA problem where health education is lobbied to death. Many countries educate their children since school to brush their teeth and to eat healthy.

Wall-E level of life quality. Life is not just about surviving but about being as healthy as possible to enjoy it.
- thrashh 4y agoWeight loss doesn’t come from eating healthier — it comes from eating less. You can lose weight just eating hot pockets.
- LEDThereBeLight 4y agoYou can lose weight only eating garbage, but our body weights seem to be much more complicated than simply calories in / calories out. Lots of things affect metabolism efficiency, so eating healthy does seem to matter, from what I’ve seen.
- feet 4y agoMost people also eat more calories than they report. Eating garbage food leads us to eat more in general, usually due to feedback mechanisms that tell us we aren't getting essential nutrients
- thrashh 4y agoThe reason why some people lose weight when they switch to healthier foods is because it takes more work to prepare, is more expensive, and/or tastes less satisfying. In that case, the weight loss is caused because the psychological effect of having to pay more for less satisfying food. Whereas it takes 3 minutes to microwave a hot pocket and a lot of people will say it tastes pretty satisfying. If someone suffers from obesity, they can have a second tasty hot pocket in 3 more minutes.
