Ask HN: What exact process do HN replies perform after analyzing a link?
act as if you were making into a program/steps or asking GPT-3 to perform the same process.
- PaulHoule 4y agoThe process is a mixture of different processes depending on who writes the reply and which process was chosen by the replier from their repertoire.
- krapp 4y agoEmail dang in the contact link below, but if HN does anything interesting, they probably won't tell you lest they risk something being gamed for SEO. From what I can tell, it checks the html's metadata for a canonical link, and compares the link against a list of banned domains, and it probably assigns a quality weight to each domain as well.
- anon115 4y agono I was talking about the people who reply.
- MilnerRoute 4y agoThere's been some discussion (for various sites) about what percentage of replies are written without actually reading any more than the headline. Are you thinking about writing a bot that replies to Hacker News posts?
- krapp 4y agoIt seems to be common enough that they had to make a specific rule in the guidelines preventing people from calling it out.
- News-Dog 4y ago>preventing people from calling it out. : https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html >Please don't post insinuations about astroturfing, shilling, bots, brigading, foreign agents and the like. It degrades discussion and is usually mistaken. If you're worried about abuse, email hn@ycombinator.com and we'll look at the data.< I think this means Not to ues the slur "Are a BOT" as in; your comment makes no sense.
- krapp 4y agoI was referring to the rule about not calling out people who comment without reading the headline: Please don't comment on whether someone read an article. "Did you even read the article? It mentions that" can be shortened to "The article mentions that."
- News-Dog 4y agoTrue! I misconstrued your Point, Apologies! I fixated on the line by MilnerRoute; >Are you thinking about writing a bot that replies to Hacker News posts?<
- anigbrowl 4y agoWhat does this even mean? There isn't one single way to evaluate all links, not sure why you'd think that.
