The Crisis in Sri Lanka Rekindles Debate over Organic Farming
- jelliclesfarm 4y agoIt’s been surreal hearing ‘ag advocates’ conduct sermons over how organic ag fails us using the Sri Lanka example. If anything, this is a teachable moment about the unsustainability of relying upon fossil fuel based ag inputs as imports. SriLanka ran out of forex and did not have a robust diversified self sustaining food industry to feed it’s people. This doesn’t make a case for fossil fuel based ag inputs and/or a case against organic agriculture. If anything, the reverse is true. Not to mention, geniuses who claim that the planet is underpopulated and we should breed even more to increase our numbers.
- NoPie 4y agoHow could they diversify with organic farming if there was not enough demand for organic tea in the world? I mean, they could diversify by not growing food at all and have some entirely different business like IT services, high-tech manufacturing or something like that (probably impossible in short-term anyway) but it doesn't change anything because someone somewhere needs to grow food to feed all 8+ billion people on this planet. It simply cannot be done by organic farming methods that are known to the humanity at this time.
- aurizon 4y agoNot sure how they failed - it seems the corrupt government stole a lot of $$ and picked on all the high $$ imports to save US$ - not realising it would cripple agriculture. Many farmers apply 2-3x as much as they need = it runs off and is wasted = algae in lakes/rivers. The public has revolted - their trouble is they have Rah-Rah elections = ignorant populists who entered politic for the loot = political musical chairs. This all came from tourism going to zero under Covdi. All they can do is get expert managers to run the economy and let the politicians give speeches and spend $$ that the managers approve - if they get good managers. these countries usually have 20 layers of familial nepotism and fill all positions with cronies that focus on loot. Wow, corrupt government is forced out via riots and someone like this -

- rbanffy 4y agoFrom reading the ad, oops, article, it becomes clear it’s not the sustainable agricultural model that’s a problem, but a poorly planned transition before value chains for the different inputs are in place.
- oifjsidjf 4y agoThis is what happens when you try to do the "9 women can have a baby in one month" equivalent to farming.
