This got me reading up on leaky abstractions. Wikipedia credits https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2002/11/11/the-law-of-leaky-abstractions/ https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2002/11/11/the-law-of-leaky-a... for the term, where he claims: "All non-trivial abstractions, to some degree, are leaky."
If leaky abstractions are unavoidable, we're left with debates about which leaky abstractions are justifiable given the constraints and goals of the design.
