You need a friend to vouch for you to get published in a top tier journal. Largely the reason why I left academia and went back to being one of the parasites she talks about. I talked to people about this in the 00s and it was common knowledge in the field that publishing anything outside what that cabal deemed acceptable would kill your career. When I asked if the persons career was worth more than their grandmothers life I didn't get an answer.
