FCC chair proposes new US broadband standard of 100Mbps down, 20Mbps up
- ev1 4y agoUp really needs to be the same as down, otherwise you're relegating everyone to being content consumers, especially disadvantaged people that might not be in a FTTH area. It's 2022, why is 2MB/s acceptable?
- wmf 4y agoReplying to ev1 and EddieDante: The tech for home serving was never great and it hasn't advanced, so giving people symmetric connections won't help. They'll just be able to upload to the cloud faster.
- EddieDante 4y agoIt's an improvement, but the FCC should be pushing for 100mbps both upstream and downstream unless they want the internet to be nothing but QVC with a comments section. The FCC also needs to force telcos to let people self-host internet services on residential broadband (web, gopher, gemini, imap, smtp, etc) and provide static IPv6 addresses. Too many major providers such as Comcast and Verizon have language in their terms of disservice that discourage self-hosting.
- ev1 4y ago"discourage" more like "termination for ToS violation or forced upgrade to a $400/m plan", it's straight forbidding, not discouraging in every major ISP I've seen. when I was in europe I had ISP give static IP even on home ADSL, encourage running home servers, reverse DNS, IPv6 allocated subnets larger than /64..
