The tone is likely a reaction to the pressure that has been placed for so long on people to work more. Forget the amount of pressure bosses place on their people to work more. Colleagues, friends, and relatives all do the same. When they don't see you working a lot, they project an idea that you're lazy. At least that has been my observation of the general mindset at least over the last 30 years.
