It's a perfectly reasonable heuristic to be wary/skeptical of sources with very bad track records. Nobody is trying to make a logical argument that the article is bad because of where it is published.

At this point, what sources have good track records? My heuristic for trusting the media is "don't do it."

  Plenty. Public health bodies, scientific journals. It blows my mind that people expect unspecialized media to get science right, and get upset when it doesn’t.
