‘75 dollars or your restaurant gets it ’ Blackmailers weaponising 1-star reviews

• londons_explore 4y ago
Lots of restaurants around me say 'your meal is for free if everyone in the party posts a 5 star review'. The manager checks it, and then zeros the bill.

I believe that is technically illegal in the United States. But I doubt it's regulated.

Why would this be any more illegal than kickbacks for referrals?

That is plain and simple corruption; it wouldn't be that different from everyone at the table telling the manager "the bill is zero for all of us, or we and all our friends leave one star reviews".
