This might be a dumb dumb question, but do the latest Apple M1 Max GPUs support raytracing? If so (I would assume via Metal), any good demos I can play with?

- zamadatix 4y agoThe GPU in the M1 Max does not have dedicated raytracing hardware and will run it as a generic compute workload (which is not that fast).
- ace2358 4y agoI thought there was also some boots to quality from the denoise performed by the neural engine? Or did I remember that wrong?
- zamadatix 4y agoIt can certainly be a component in the pipeline but even when you have a bunch of dedicated raytracing hardware it can be hard to get enough data to be worth denoising. Nvidia RTX cards use a combination of all 3 (dedicated raytracing hardware, traditional GPU compute, and dedicated neural compute) and still even the high end desktop cards have to be teased to get acceptable performance in non-trivial raytracing demos and games. Where the M1 Max GPU really shines is having 64 GB of high speed memory. Any other scenario and it's really not all that special a laptop GPU in terms of performance or ability, contrasting to the CPU which is can be quite impressive in both regards even when compared to desktop/fixed workstation class options.
