Tesla Superchargers Are Opening Up to Any Electric Car in the US
- gamblor956 4y agoWhile Tesla makes shoddy cars, their Superchargers are second to none. This is what will save Tesla as a company once the legacy automakers start releasing EVs en masse.
- wrycoder 4y agoMaybe Musk will go into the modular fission reactor business?
- f0e4c2f7 4y agoAnyone know if there is a converter or other way to charge a Bolt on a Tesla charger after this?
- blake1 4y agoThe bolt uses CCS, and they should be adding the connectors over time. https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/764/tesla-to-add-ccs-connector-to-superchargers-in-the-us https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/764/tesla-to-add-ccs-conne...
- theluketaylor 4y agoI am not looking forward to this as a Tesla owner. Not because I want exclusivity of the supercharger network, but because it's going to be a logistical mess. Tesla superchargers are built specifically to handle charging ports where Tesla places them which isn't true of all vehicles. A CCS car with a port in the wrong spot is going to take up 2 supercharger positions while they charge because the cables are super short. Tesla also developed their DC charging before CCS was finalized. They are limited to their ~400V packs, so Tesla uses huge amperage to get >200 kW speeds. CCS is limited to 500A, so most CCS cars are engineered to handle at most 500A (and many top out at 350A since electrify america and ionity top out there). Many CCS cars are going to charge slower on Superchargers than a Tesla would, especially 800V cars which are becoming more common. Charging slower means using a stall longer and less availability for everyone else. I would much prefer my north american tesla was more like a euro tesla and had a CCS port.
- entropicgravity 4y agoAs I recall Tesla got $4bn of government funding to do this. Win win.
