Images should vary in age, ability, race, nationality, gender, body types
Example names should be different from the status quo
Lists of people should not be homogenous
Can everyone who might view this to see someone like themselves represented in it?
In other words, the culture or people that created something must not allow their identity to be reflected in that something.
This is how you end up with ridiculous situations such as a classical music quartet fired by its own board for focusing on European classical music [1], or portraying Victorian England as exceedingly, counterfactually diverse [2]. Prohibiting focusing on one's own culture (called 'centering' nowadays) is, effectively, prohibiting having an identity.

[2] Moffat even talks about the idea he mentions above — the excuse of “historical accuracy” that some people often give to justify an all-white cast — “[W]e’ve kind of got to tell a lie: we’ll go back into history and there will be black people where, historically, there wouldn’t have been, and we won’t dwell on that. We’ll say, ‘To hell with it, this is the imaginary, better version of the world. By believing in it, we’ll summon it forth.’” - https://www.themarysue.com/steven-moffat-on-doctor-who-diversity/ https://www.themarysue.com/steven-moffat-on-doctor-who-diver...

Plenty of good options, but that would require some level of effort and research, better just to patronize people by putting in corny anachronisms. Ofc at the same time, maybe that's a bad idea, media seems deadset on pandering to the lowest common denominator and they'll probably lose money on and stories settings that average person isn't comfortable or familiar with.
- AinderS 4y agoWhat the average person is comfortable or familiar with is itself largely determined by the media.
