>How much of modern society is "cat toys for humans"?
None, with the exception of baby toys. Cat toys exist because humans are an order or two of magnitude more intelligent than cats. We have near omniscient knowledge of cat psychology and thus have been able to develop methods to placate almost any cat.
There is no intelligence differential of such magnitude between humans (again, unless you consider adults versus babies). While distractions do exist, there is no universal distraction analogous to cat toys that causes a vast majority of us to “chase worthless things to fritter away our time and energy, so we don't do anything real.”
