Team: “We estimate that solving this problem will take two elephants and a gazelle, we came to this estimate by using our best guesses informed by our expertise on the matter”. Manager: “well I can’t disagree that that is your estimate.” Scrum master: “based on past performance, two elephants and a gazelle will take 5 weeks to complete.” Manager: “well I can’t disagree that this is what past performance tells us.” In reality what happens is that you end up having a manager in your estimation meetings telling you that one of the elephants have to be a gazelle, because he needs to make a deadline and believes that forcing your estimate will somehow bend reality to conform to it.
