I don’t think there is a conspiracy here. HN more than other sites is frequented by techno-optimists, who believe humanity’s problems can be solved with technology. Those people are more likely to favor nuclear power as a technological solution to the climate crisis, and therefore more likely to post articles favoring that view. Those articles often appear on nuclear lobbying websites. What you are seeing is the natural bias of the HN audience, nothing more.
- RobertRoberts 4y agoThanks, that is a rational explanation for the trend I've been seeing. (it's been years of this, just recently it feels like another up-tick...)
- tedk-42 4y agoIt's so hard to fight a pro-nuclear opinion when you're arguing against people of 0 science or engineering background and only see toxic waste that is difficult to dispose of as the problem. Recent oil prices and obvious climate catastrophes have started shifting the general publics opinions and thus, many of us are coming out from under rocks so to speak.
- Krasnol 4y agoThis is kinda weird explanation since there is so much technology and especially PROGRESS around renewable tech. Still you see it ridiculed or sometimes even hated around the same threads. So I guess there must be a different explanation.
- RobertRoberts 4y agoI agree, but it _could_ explain why it would happens here, if it's true that the larger HN audience/users like nuclear and don't like renewables. While to many people nuclear is a backwaters idea (except fusion and other non-polluting nuke systems) there are possibly at lot that do like 50s style nuclear power. I just didn't want to really think it was possible with such a well educated/logical group.
- Krasnol 4y agoA well educated group doesn't automatically become immune to Astro-Turfing. People like Michael Shellenberger targeted especially this group of people looking for exactly those results. Today we see his arguments all over the bubble.
