Tropy: An Open-Source App to Organize Your Research Photos
- chazeon 4y agoThis project reminds me of Eagle[1], which is also a photo management tool for a specific purpose, designer in its case. The interface looks similar at least. For scientific researcher, this tool will have some benefit. I create too much plots when preparing a papers, and they always cluttered my Downloads. But I hope there are support for MathJax/KaTeX rendering. [1]: https://en.eagle.cool/ https://en.eagle.cool/
- jamessb 4y agoI think the intended use is for people who need to organise photos of historical documents that they took when visiting archives or libraries, rather than for people who need to organise plots or figures that they have produced. The project page says "Built for today’s archival research" and "Take control of your research photos with Tropy, a tool that shortens the path from finding archival sources to writing about them. Spend more time using your research photos, and less time hunting for them." [1] [1]: https://tropy.org/ https://tropy.org/
- noodlesUK 4y agoThis is at least somewhat related to the fantastic Zotero citations tool. I think it's run by the same org [1]. If it's 10% as useful as Zotero it will be a great app. [1] https://digitalscholar.org https://digitalscholar.org
- poopypoopington 4y agoWho is the intended use case? History PhDs for example?
- HexDecOctBin 4y agoIs there any organiser software that handles a multitude of data formats (images, documents, audio, video, etc.)?
- Multicomp 4y agoI'd be interested to hear this but that's probably a holy grail that doesn't easily exist. There are heavyweight document management systems. There's Picasa. There's one OneNote. I guess technically there are image boards that support uploading videos and audio too but idk about documents
- jamessb 4y agoThere are general file tagging tools like TagSpaces [1] and TagFlow [2] (though this seems to no longer be being maintained [3]).
