Google straight-up ruined its brand new YouTube experience for older Chromecasts
- rektide 4y agoCast is so pure & good. Ubicomp's clearest & best success. Thankfully the use the mobile app + cast is unaffected- need to get far into this article to hear that. The parallel to folks begging for dumb tv's these days & getting only shitty softwared up cruftbucket experiences is stunning. Cast has turned tv's back into dumb tv's, #NoOS devices, just... networked dumb tvs. Cast's whole elegance was keeping the tv simple & dumb, in being a naive target. Trying to re-applicationize the tv experience is a collision course for the pervasive dysfunction we'd gladly just left behind. I cant help but see Android TV as a mortal threat to the planet's only successful & enjoyable networked ecosystem. Thankfully the damage atm seems semi-contained, but it is still sad seeing an alternative mode, with the phone as a secondary remote (rather than in Cast as the primary directing devic, already collapse. I keep thinking it's wild how articles widely rag on the Nexus Q as a bomb. As if that networked device ever really was given any chance. I do think the packaged software plus hardware experince it proposed was destined to be worse than the decoupled Cast architecture, that it was too special purpose, but i also dont think the Q ever got a faur shake chance. (The price was also absurd, especially for the time.)
