How Psychopaths See the World (2018)
- karmakaze 4y ago> Most of us mentalize automatically. From infancy, other minds involuntarily seep into our own. The same thing, apparently, happens less strongly in psychopaths. [...] these people can deliberately take another person’s perspective, but on average, they don’t automatically do so to the extent that most other people do. “This is the first time we’re seeing evidence that psychopaths don’t have this automatic ability that most of us have,” Baskin-Sommers says. Interesting that the 'ability' is framed as the automatic behaviour. I would have flipped it as psychopaths have the ability to selectively/consciously consider others' perspectives, not as in being better/worse but subconscious/conscious. My own worldview is that people are generally responsible for their own emotional state. Of course I choose to behave ethically and within social norms for the most part and make exceptions for a small circle of people I'm close with. Another advantage that I also find is being able to be more objective at times about my own emotions/judgements rather than having them implicitly in control of every situation.
