To share my anecdote, the place where I work often pits engineers' solutions/estimates against eachother and then picks & promotes the "fastest" one. Never mind that typically these faster estimates typically overrun to make them equal in retrospect, oh and come with bugs and needed improvements that will only be "discovered" by customers over the next 24 months...

- kqr 4y agoThis is basically how government contracting to the lowest bidder works too. The penalty for overshooting your budget by a lot is far less severe than missing out on the contract.
- maerF0x0 4y agoso what's the solution? Maybe we can make engineers work for free until they deliver what they promised? (that's sarcasm btw).
