Try a tutorial written in a language you understand well that does not routinely feature monads. IME the biggest hurdle is convincing yourself you've actually understood them, because they seem so mundane that it's weird they even have a name.

That's my experience too. I have a perfectly good understanding of the monad interface and some of its more common use cases, but it never felt like I had a magical moment of clarity regarding their nature, so I always doubted I really understood them.
