I went back to the office this summer for a month. I came in every day, but there was only a handful of people at any given moment. My commute is 5 minutes so I didn't really mind.
It was awesome, really enjoyed working in an office without all the distractions from home.
Then on a few days a lot more people came in and it was so loud I had trouble focusing (idiotic open-space WeWork office), and I remembered why I disliked working in an office in the first place.
For some reason in software engineering there is an insane level of disrespect for the workers. We get big empty rooms with +50 desks. The overwhelming majority weren't from my team so the ever present chatter wasn't even relevant to me.
I love interacting with people from my team, but the current office situation is simply too pathetic for me to forgo my quiet home office.
- ghaff 4y agoThat used to be quite common for rank and file in engineering (and presumably other professions generally. https://images.app.goo.gl/AUmJgX6DsJCDJapg8 https://images.app.goo.gl/AUmJgX6DsJCDJapg8 And, yes, white shirts and ties too. Hardly something unique to modern software engineering.
