Chromium is open source, so what is the problem of the chromium engine becoming THE standard for the web?
- krapp 4y agoIt's weird - F/OSS typically has no issue with some projects being "standards" as long as they're licensed appropriately, there are tons of "monopolies" in open source, no one cares. Yet when it comes to building a new browser, touching any Google code is verboten, even though there's little real way to "innovate" the rendering an HTML document - it should all look and act the same.
- dredmorbius 4y agoIt's a tremendously complex monoculture effectively controlled by a single entity which also happens to be one of the largest companies in the world as well as the Web's (and world's) largest advertising entity. The risks raised are of security, of single bug or organisational compromise putting at risk a tremendous amount of infrastructure (informational, institutional, financial, commercial, governmental, healthcare, social & cultural), of incentives which overwhelmingly favour a single party to the exclusion of others, and the demonstrated corresive and inequality-driving effects of advertising itself.
