My question, that I've asked since I learned about secure deletion in the 90's is... has anyone made a consumer grade, or even "professional grade" device that can read the previous contents of a disk that has been overwritten just once?
To my knowledge, still unless your data is worth the price of a scanning electron microscope and the appropriate expertise in running one for this purpose, a single overwrite is sufficient, and a constant stream of 0xFFh or 0x00h is already more than enough.
I could be wrong (and I don't even mind if I am. That's what learning is all about). Science is always advancing. But I have never heard that this particular area has advanced beyond electron microscopy. Links to change my mind? Who has equipment that reads prior data on overwritten drives on an enterprise budget?
