I don't see any other practical way, and since the 0 day is rare it makes sense to choose to protect it rather than prosecute every crime revealed through its use or use it against too many targets. As long as they get warrants that's enough of a check and balance for me.
- fulafel 4y agoThe article doesn't say what they used this for. Generally clandestine phone/computer break-ins and wiretapping have alternatives in investigation techniques.
- Canada 4y agoClandestine phone/computer break-ins are the new wiretaps, and I'm just fine with wiretapping by law enforcement with oversight, and with a cost significant enough to require targeted use. I'm not okay with ubiquitous surveillance of the public, which is what you end up with when communication is largely conducted electronically without end to end encryption. If we generally have end to end encryption, then I think it's acceptable that law enforcement can hack and plant bugs. Of course law enforcement will abuse this, as law enforcement is only human. Law enforcement can abuse all of its powers anyway, but it's kept in check by the cost of doing so, thus it's not possible for the abuse to scale to the point where it has severe chilling effect on the whole society.
