Seems like a great way to prevent recordings by having one officer move towards onlookers and force them an arbitrary distance away

- Fargoan 4y agoThis is exactly what's going to happen.
- ifelsethenyeah 4y ago"Nothing to see here. Please disperse. And stop recording."
- ravenstine 4y agoWhich they can and often do already...
- woodruffw 4y agoThe fact that the police currently abuse their power isn't a good reason to give them additional legal latitude to do so.
- bonestamp2 4y agoI don't think it was meant as justification, but rather as proof that it will definitely continue to happen.
- woodruffw 4y agoI agree that it'll continue to happen, but I don't think we should allow that to desensitize us to attempts to further criminalize basic civic behavior.
- bonestamp2 4y agoAgreed. We know it's going to be problematic because it's already problematic.
- Thorrez 4y agoIt's not 8 feet from the nearest cop. It's 8 feet from where the arrest is happening. So unless both the arresting officer and the arrestee come toward you, you can stay where you are and film.
- njharman 4y agoQuote me that line in the law that says that.
- refurb 4y agohttps://www.azleg.gov/legtext/55leg/2R/bills/HB2319S.pdf https://www.azleg.gov/legtext/55leg/2R/bills/HB2319S.pdf IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR A PERSON TO KNOWINGLY MAKE A VIDEO RECORDING 7 OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION, "LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY" 31 MEANS ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: 32 1. QUESTIONING A SUSPICIOUS PERSON. 33 2. CONDUCTING AN ARREST, ISSUING A SUMMONS OR ENFORCING THE LAW. 34 3. HANDLING AN EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED OR DISORDERLY PERSON WHO IS 35 EXHIBITING ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR. Edit: If you're the subject of police action, the 8 ft rule doesn't apply. A PERSON WHO IS 22 THE SUBJECT OF POLICE CONTACT MAY RECORD THE ENCOUNTER IF THE PERSON IS 23 NOT INTERFERING WITH LAWFUL POLICE ACTIONS,
- scarecrowbob 4y agoI;m not savvy with law, but wouldn't an officer talking to you be engaging in " rQUESTIONING A SUSPICIOUS PERSON."
- mlyle 4y agoIf the police officer is questioning you as a suspicious person, "NOTWITHSTANDING SUBSECTION A OF THIS SECTION, A PERSON WHO IS 22 THE SUBJECT OF POLICE CONTACT MAY RECORD THE ENCOUNTER IF THE PERSON IS 23 NOT INTERFERING WITH LAWFUL POLICE ACTIONS,..."

- spyder 4y agoNot if it's 8 feet above from a drone, or drone in 8 feet auto-follow mode :-D /s (But, there is probably more strict laws for drones in general, I don't know the US rules about that.)
