Perhaps intelligence is rare, but I think just like the laws of chemistry, physics, maths, there are laws for life. Things may vary heavily but I think there is life in abundance throughout the universe. Maybe we are unlucky and our neighborhood is dry. We find traces of ingredients everywhere, and I am sure somewhere out there the mixing is just right. I even think that it is our duty to spread life. By going to space ourselves we take our little buddies with us (bacteria, viruses, plants, animals), thus fulfilling a natural tendency of life itself to spread.
