AFAICT, it's an opinionated refactoring of the core because... Reasons. The devs might want to consider the lost time, and ultimate impact, of Flickr rewriting its internals for... Similar reasons. Sure, the project may seem unwieldy, but major refractors or rewrites are never worth it.
