Absolutely wonderful write up. And filed away for when I need to point my cofounders to something on why we should put it off as long as possible.
It's crazy how different the approach to SOC2 here is, having someone in the company running it vs having a "security/compliance" consultant taking point. We wound up with basically everything in "What We Didn’t Let SOC2 Make Us Do", despite protests by most of the engineering team and lots of documentation. It was very much a case of badly aligned incentives. "Person who sells services suggests buying more services from him".
One of the very annoying additional requirements was all the additional process around Jira (which is already annoying enough to use). Such as "Engineering cannot make this kind of card, it must be made by a product manager" and "Engineering cannot move the card into the final state, that must also be a product manager". Which might be fine for a larger company, but we had one PM and 3.5 devs.
- paulmendoza 4y agoGet Vanta. It really simplifies the process.
- tptacek 4y agoIn what way? When you used Vanta, did you install Vanta software on your fleet? What engineering tasks did Vanta get you to undertake?
