With Apple Podcasts, you can't even reliably start a podcast on your phone and continue it on your phone. I kept finding it would lose its place in a podcast. Not a big deal for a thirty-minute one, but if you're listening to a long one (say 3-4 hours), it's a huge issue - especially as (at least at the time) there was no "skip X seconds ahead". You had to try to move the slider button to the correct timestamp. I'll second the recommendation for Overcast. Maybe not perfect, but it's good enough and it's free.
