I think it's just an aspect of competition, and people's ego. In most competitive games, human psychology is just as important as any other aspect, and trash talk has been around since forever in order to tilt a player. I don't personally view this as a negative. It's the team-based games where kids are constantly yelling or berating their teammates for missteps that are far more annoying and negative.
