The country gets the leadership it deserves. We elect people who tell us X or Y because that's what we want to hear. The only way to be honest and also get elected seems to be to not understand that your promises are impossible to keep. Also we're not a little boat that can be turned around in a few minutes - we're like a huge tanker that cannot turn suddenly and no amount of radical action is going to turn it into a jet aeroplane or whatever it is that some people imagine it could be. Most of us are ignorant of how things work (I'm definitely included in that - I only know a small bit of how some things work) and we can be full of ridiculous and impractical ideas and that is exploited by politicians. The politicians that are honorable and don't exploit our silliness ..... don't get elected.
