Show HN: Barfi – Python flow based programming with GUI
What? Another flow based programming library for Python?
Yes.
All the FBP libraries out there for Python need to be run as a self contained application. They are not components that could be integrated into your existing data workflows. Barfi, on the other hand can be integrated. At the moment it has a Streamlit component that you can use in your Streamlit apps.
Currently, I am working on a Jupyter notebook widget.
- airbreather 4y agoI would like to be able to trunk connections.
- krishadi 4y agoCould you be more specific as to what you want to implement?
- srvmshr 4y agoLooking pretty good for real! Also doesn't seem to have a ton of dependencies, so maintenance should be easier. I think Barfi can be a good aid to kids & beginners, and you should probably position it that way. The UI reminds me distinctly of Labview - with the virtual I/O pins having little 'bubble-heads' and action definition within the block.
- krishadi 4y agoThe idea definitely was to make the complex programs we write in Python more accessible to a larger audience who typically don't program or know Python. So, they can play with it. Something I am trying to explore is a visual tool to build ML models.
- srvmshr 4y agoI think Sony DL studio is something along those lines. Just drag & drop blocks to create models.
- Kerbonut 4y agoReminds me of node red. For prototyping I definitely enjoy cobbling together something using jupyter notebooks and wouldn’t mind playing around with barfi.
- krishadi 4y agoIf you want some specific blocks made for you, just raise an issue and I'll get to it :)
- holografix 4y agoHaving recently been exposed to Unreal Engine’s Blueprint system of visual programming I am bullish on their re-emergence. Would love to give this a go
- krishadi 4y agoWould love to hear what you think about it, and what can be done to improve it :)
- gourabmi 4y agoDetour - The README says that the frontend of Barfi (Also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barfi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barfi ) is made using BaklavaJS. This is so adorable!
- krishadi 4y agoOP here. :D What Barfi and Baklava as sweets have in common is that they are made to be served as small Blocks.
- tardismechanic 4y agoSide note: Its (most probably) pronounced burr-feee, a South Asian sweet dish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barfi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barfi Not, you know, the other way...
