To me, this falls under the category of — you can’t have a technical solution to a societal problem. Yes, technology may have made your friend feel better. But the actual thing that protected him was the law, not the obfuscated PDFs. But, if the judge didn’t care and it made your friend feel better, who am I to judge? But this isn’t a great protection scheme… it just adds a few extra technical hurdles that are easy to get around.
