Some human aspect of his story: during the Cultural Revolution, he and his mother were assigned to be laborers. He could not advance academically, and it sounds like he always felt he was an outsider to academics. After this breakthrough, people questioned how much his advisor did or did not support him. Soon thereafter, he landed a job at UC Santa Cruz.
