Maybe AI Isn’t as Scary as We Thought
- bioemerl 4y agoI feel like this article underplays that there are many other factors effecting autocratic States like China and Russia. Russia, for example, simply isn't a high tech nation. I never expected them to be good at AI. China's zero COVID policy is not a failure of AI, it's an inevitability when it comes to a nation of 1.5 billion and a virus endemic to the rest of the world. AI will enable surveillance and oppression of dissidents by providing a useful tool for States to detect "bad behavior". AI will also empower amazing creativity and allow us to create works of art, often as an individual, that would have been impossible in the past. AI are a powerful tool, and as humans do, we will use them for amazing and horrifying purpose. It's going to be scary and amazing at the same time. It's on us to make sure we live in the country where it's not scary.
