You only 'go to the video' when you feel you've not progressed as far as you'd projected during the particular sprint (taking into account the contractor's skill set & hours worked). It's no different than a boss checking up on an in-house employee to see why their output is not optimal. I do agree with your sentiments to a point though. I don't want a contractor that appears busy. I want one that is busy.
