I have sympathy with the author of course but they come across as very naive. Of course this is how large corps work, they demean their employees, intentionally instilling fear and doubt through these ridiculous performance appraisal systems. That fear creates a feeling of dependence on the employer, so you then work harder, longer hours desperate to keep your job and survive. Just don't work at these places.
