Using the Battery Pack as a structural body part of an EV
- ryzvonusef 4y agoIn the video, you can see that the front car seats and the center console+trim pieces are assembled on top of the battery pack, a seal is applied to the edges of the pack and it is shoved into the car from below. The pros I see are that of course there are the cost savings, but it makes assembly process much easier/faster, both for the battery pack itself, and for the rest of the car, since it has a giant hole in the floor, so you could fiddle with the instrument panel or back seat for example, while standing in the hole looking above/front instead of bending down and looking from an awkward angle. cons I see are the seal, which is the only thing preventing water from below coming in, they note that while most of the sealant is fairly squished and creating a tight seal, in some places it still has some give, which could be a potential issue. Another thing is the edge supported battery pack, there is nothing in the car frame supporting the battery pack from the middle, I wonder if that would be an issue But overall, i feel, that while we mock the cars for have plain design and toy-car like features, I think for EVs, going the toy car route IS the best option; two "giga"-castings of the front and back plus a structural battery pack, looks that are optimized for Drag-Coefficient reduction, etc
