El Ojo – The circular island that moves by itself
- pavel_lishin 4y agoIt's open on Saturdays and Mondays, eh?
- ksaj 4y agoMechanically it's easy to see and understand how this happens. What triggered it is a mystery, though, since the river that feeds it is not moving at any significant velocity. It is common on icy ponds. In this case, the island itself is more solid than its surrounding, so they are basically operating like a set of gears, while the harder middle one is wearing down at a slower rate than the "outer gear," that is ground to a near perfect circle. Theoretically after a long time the island will be too small, or the outer ring too large, to keep up that grinding inertia, so you'll end up with a floating or sunken circular island in a perfectly circular lake.
