I’m happy with this. Apple was begging for this with their narsistic and arrogant anti-consumer behavior.
Also app store these days is pretty much ruined. Almost all new apps are ”free” but in the end require a monthly membership or some other BS. Hopefully soon we can just pull apps directly from github releases.
- criddell 4y agoI'm looking forward to the consoles being forced to end some of their anti-consumer policies. It's about time people who buy a Switch or PS5 can use them for more than what Sony and Nintendo say they are allowed to.
- stale2002 4y agoFeel free to try and make a law doing that, if you can get support. But this current law is not going to be stopped just because there is some other industry that you claim has problems as well.
- criddell 4y agoThis legislation all covers systems with 45 million users. That covers the PS4 and Switch and within a year or two will cover the PS5 (that's assuming a conservative 1 console = 1 user).
- Klonoar 4y ago…or you could pay developers what they charge. Stop participating in a race to the bottom.
- illuminati1911 4y agoThe github open source software costs $0. I’m fine paying that. You can keep on paying $19.99/month for a calculator in Apple’s closed fake market if you want even after this regulation.
- Klonoar 4y agoNobody is paying $19.99/month for a calculator, you can certainly come up with a better argument than this.
- illuminati1911 4y agoHow do you know? It's not like I specifically was even talking about calculators. App store is pretty much 99% full of primitive "free" apps that all offer unreasonably expensive monthly payments and that's it. Whether it's calendar, email client, workout tracker, caloric intake/nutrition app or whatever they all have same business model: Offer crippled "free" version or unreasonable monthly payment plan. I'll rather code a small app myself and host it myself than pay a 5/10/20/40 dollars a month for a app which actual value is 1 dollar (single payment).
- Apocryphon 4y agoWell, maybe not a calculator, and not at that rate. https://twitter.com/lapcatsoftware/status/1513672378236166149 https://twitter.com/lapcatsoftware/status/151367237823616614... (thread)
