Wikipedia describes https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Twin_QSO https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Twin_QSO ("Old Faithful") as the first identified gravitationally lensed object.
So, "since forever" is 1979, which makes me feel old.
