How does this work, given there is no sale? Sales tax applies to the sale price paid, but there is no payment. I think the same is true for use tax, too.

- sys_64738 4y agoJust like if somebody gifts you a car and you try to register. You need to pay the estimated value sales tax.
- nulbyte 4y agoI don't think this is universal among all states. After a quick search, I found sales tax does not apply to gifted vehicles in a number of states: Kentucky, Tennessee, New York, Minnesota (between immediate family members). In Texas, it's a $10 gift tax in lieu of sales tax.
