My take is that even 100-200 years ago there was really not much moving up oppertunity outside the monarchy. The result was a rather cruel treatment to those lower in the power stucture. Those lower stayed anyway in hopes if moving up. Now days a person low in the monarchy has better results by defecting while leveraaging their position to some gov or corporate instance. They no longer must endure a less than status with empty hope of falling up luck.
